Congregation’s positive response to Community Resource Center opportunities

After meeting with representatives from the Community Resource Center (CRC) in Encinitas, members of several SDUMC committees agreed that our congregation has an amazing opportunity to help meet the needs of our community.

These needs are real and they are all encompassing for many families. Luckily, we are here to help in a way that will connect people and encourage meaningful relationships.

In fact, our congregation has a long history with the CRC. The monthly Peanut Butter Sunday collections of food and the holiday basket program benefit the CRC clients. While these programs are integral to our assistance of those in need, it is not sufficient.

The number of people seeking assistance at the CRC has dramatically increased. Many of us may also be on the “financial edge” and wonder what we could possibly do to help others in our own time of need.

The CRC has outlined several ways we can give of our time and put our skills to use.

  • First, we are seeking regular volunteers to conduct intake interviews with potential CRC clients. There is a brief training session for new volunteers and staff will always be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
  • Second, we are seeking a team of people to do “handy work” on the buildings and apartments that CRC leases for clients. When a new family arrives, we want to ensure that there is fresh paint on the walls, properly running toilets, etc.
  • Last, but not least, we are seeking regular volunteers to help stock the food pantry and give out grocery bags to those in need. There is also an opportunity to pick up groceries donated by local markets on a regular basis.
If none of these sounds appealing to you, let us know what you would like to do to benefit the community. We are open to suggestions!

The Church & Society committee can’t do it alone. We are confident that the congregation will help us assist in meeting the needs of our brothers and sisters.
