As we approach another September 11th, many memories swirl about of the tragic day 21 years ago. Remembering 9/11 and continuing to see difficulties worldwide may cause us to want to run off to a hiding place. And like many of you, I can become frustrated as I wonder how we lost the remarkable unity that was felt in the weeks after September 11th.
However, as Christ-followers, we have been given the gift of hope. Fred Rogers reminded all of us not to lose hope and the power of unity, "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’"
I pray that our children, youth, and community can see all the ways that San Dieguito UMC members and friends are "helpers" in a chaotic world. We can also share an invitation to our neighbors to join our church family and be “helpers” alongside us through our missional ministries.
This Sunday's theme will come from John chapter 17, in which Jesus prays that we may be a united people. Our morning will be filled with hope as we will be blessed by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir of San Diego at our 9:30 a.m. worship. I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday at 8:00 a.m. (in the Chapel for a shortened Communion Service), 9:30 a.m. (in the Sanctuary for a vibrant morning of Worship), or on Livestream at 9:30 a.m. (and throughout the day and week on our YouTube Channel).
As we were all saddened by the death of Queen Elizabeth II, I was reminded that in a recent speech, she shared the theme we’ll discuss, "In these testing times, it is my hope that you can draw strength and inspiration from what we share, as we work together towards a healthy, sustainable and prosperous future for all." May it be so…
Grace, Peace, and Prayers,
