My Post-1

"The Lord who told me to take care of my people meant me to do it just as long as I live, and so I did what he told me." Harriet Tubman

Dear SDUMC Family,

I hope you find a few moments to take in God's creation on this beautiful North County summer weekend.

This Sunday, we'll continue our sermon series, Intersections: God Stories – Our Stories 2022, with a story that I know will speak to all of us. As our family walked around the museums of Washington D.C. in June, I was reminded of a woman that showed resilient faith during a horrific period in U.S. history. The exhibit was marking the 200th birthday of Harriet Tubman.

I've heard many stories about this inspiring and courageous woman throughout my life. During my childhood, my parents would take us to visit the historical sites along the Underground Railroad. We would hear guides share stories of Harriet Tubman's extraordinary courage to bring others to freedom. Then, in seminary, a guest lecturer discussed how her unwavering faith carried her through the most challenging times. This week we'll look at how Harriet's life can teach us to have a resilient faith amid anxieties in the world, frustration, and uncertainties.

As I was thinking about our July series, I also discovered that the amazing Manuelita Brown was working on a life-size sculpture of Harriet Tubman that would be unveiled in Pomona on July 4th (I did get a sneak peek). Manuelita will share a Ministry Moment on Sunday describing her beautiful sculpture. We'll share some pictures of the unveiling, and I hope you can take a trip to see this incredible work of art.

I look forward to Worshiping with you this Sunday at 8:00 a.m. (in the Chapel for a shortened Communion Service), 9:30 a.m. (in the Sanctuary), or on Livestream at 9:30 a.m. (and throughout the day and week on our YouTube Channel). The morning will be filled with inspiring music, our continued journey through Galatians, and the story of one, Harriet Tubman, who listened to God and answered the call with resilient faith.

Have a blessed weekend!

Grace and Peace,
John

P.S. I hope you'll join me in bringing some school supplies to help the children of our community and the surrounding area be able to start the school year off with everything they need. The list is included below. We'll have collection bins around campus, or you can stop by the office during the week.

P.P.S. Please keep the Youth Group in your prayers for their travels and work at S.S.P. 2022.
